GENETIC DIVERSITY AMONG THE PHILIPPINE TRADITIONAL MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.) POPULATIONS BASED ON SSR MARKERS

This paper reports the first genetic diversity analysis of Philippine traditional maize populations performed through a cost-effective DNA pooling strategy. The among selected 100 collected from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao was evaluated using twenty simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers at Institute Plant Breeding, University Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. A total 138 bands ranging two to 12 per primer were detected. average number polymorphic alleles, polymorphism rate, effective multiplex ratio, marker index, resolving power, expected heterozygosity are 6.283, 87.17%, 5.798, 4.104, 15.897, 0.658, respectively. information content (PIC) varied between 0.141 0.848, with an value 0.620. dendrogram constructed dissimilarity coefficient 0.14 0.55 mean index 0.425. Cluster revealed 13 groups based on result Approximately Unbiased (AU) p-values 10,000 bootstrap iterations. cluster enabled classification ambiguous places origin. Analysis molecular variance (AMOVA) showed higher within-population (70%) than among-population (30%) PhiPT (pairwise differentiation metric) 0.298 (P = 0.001). These results significant in power SSR analyses despite age this technology. findings will aid plant breeders developing approaches towards knowledgeable efficient execution breeding programs populations.
